The Artist and Creator Behind
Surrey Hills Ceramics

Christopher Dykes

After many years of working in law in London, Chris moved to the serene Surrey Hills with his partner and  two dogs in 2023. The peace, nature, and beauty of Surrey Hills have inspired a deep appreciation for the simple things in life.

Chris and his partner located a manual, old and rusty pottery wheel from Facebook Marketplace. This was the beginning of their adventure. After years of dreaming of owning one, this was the start of an overwhelming passion for the art. Chris and his partner spent days reviving the old wheel back to life, with success. The manual wheel is still in use today, the only wheel in their posession. Traditional methods are valued within Surrey Hills Ceramics, and this is reflected in the quality and uniqueness of each piece.

The wheel is located in the concervatory of their home, which has now become Chris' studio. Windows decorated with ivy, facing the garden where vegeables, fruit trees and flowers are growing, this creates a serene and calming space where creativity can grow and thrive.

For years, Chris have been passionate about woodworking and have honed his skills in this craft. Chris  also have a keen interest in mountain biking and nature, which has taught him a lot about the quality of the earth (and local clay which he collects  by hand).

Now, he is pouring his heart and soul into creating unique, handcrafted pieces. With each creation, he  finds immense joy and fulfillment. Chris have discovered his true passion in life; creating beautiful pieces using technique, skills and quality clay.

Chris sourced his own kiln in 2024, which has completed the studio. There, Chris are able to follow his pieces from the beginning to the product is finished and ready for your home.

On our website, you will come across different collections. These collections are carefully named after things, animals and people that Chris values in life. The 'Polly' and 'Alma' collection is named after Chris and his partner's beloved dogs, who frequently inspect the pottery studio and products made by Chris. We can assure you that each piece has been approved by this duo; the Quality Assurance Team.
